Imperialism- the policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries, or of acquiring and holding colonies and dependencies.

History of European Imperialism
European Imperialism did not begin in the 1800s. European states won empires in the Amerias after 1492, established colonies in South Asia, and gained toeholds on the coasts of Africa and China. Europe had little infulence on the lives of peoples of CHina, India, or Africa. With their new economic and military strength, Europeans emarked on a aggressive path of expansion that today we call it "New ImperialismR."
There were 4 major causes of Imperialism thoroughout the world: Social Darwinism,Economic Interests, Political and Military Motives, and Humanitarian and Religious goals. Causes `Social Darwinism- West's civilizing mission was a growing sense of racial rule. The applied Darwin's ideas about natural selsction and survival of te fittest to human societies. Economc Interests- Manufactureres wanted access to natural resources such as rubber, petroleum, manganese fro steel and pal oil for machinery. Political and Military Motives- these issues were closely linked to economic motives. Steam-powered merchant ships and naval vessels needed bases around the world to take on coal and supplies. Humanitarian and Religious goals-Missionaries, doctoors and colonial officials beleved they had a duty to sprea what they saw as the blessings of western civilization, including its medicine, law, and christian religion.
Easily Forced-As Europe grew stronger, older groups around the world were decreasing. Wars and the slave trade made Africa weaker. not strong enough to resist the European countries. They hade strong economics, well-organized governments, and powerful armies and navies.
consequences of Imperialism and the Effects today
New technology and medicine was introduced into Africa
Africans were treated poorly by the Europeans, and slaves were sent to Asia.
Cultures were taken away.
Terrorism and racism are the lasting effects of imperialism today
Through a Europeans eyes-
Citizens living in Britain felt that the rule their government had over other countries was the best ever and there would never be anything better.
Many different countries tried to resist European Imperialism but only Liberia and Ethiopia succeeded.

They felt extremely inferior to the Europeans considering how racist and forceful they acte
The Europeans did not even treat these people like human beings, so they had quire a different perspective on imperialism
Many felt that their heritage and culture was ta ken away from them, and did not like the fact that they could no longer practice their own religion anymore
